TREILLAGED TERRACE
Never mind the small footprint; this jewel box terrace is bedecked with custom details that are consistent with the caliber of the property’s exquisite interior. The 13’ x 20’ space marks the southern point of the property’s central axis, with views to Lake Michigan situated at the north. Consistent with the library-inspired motifs found throughout the home, the terrace is an ideal reading nook (with space to grill, to lounge, and to dine alfresco) while surrounded by lush greenery.
With a brick facade to the west and north, adjacent terraces to the east, urban tapestry views to the south, a ceiling two stories above – not to mention the Lakefront just a block away – the setting provides several challenges.
Every inch of the space was tailored to ensure a seamless connection with the interiors. New bluestone pavers in a tone-on-tone harlequin pattern are raised on pedestals to match the level of the interior flooring. Custom treillage panels define the parameters of the outdoor room. A copper lantern is suspended above the primary seating group; the fixture aligns with interior chandeliers that trace the residence’s central axis. The grill cabinet is styled as a potting bench, which obscures views of the mechanical room window. Clipped pyramidal taxus shrubs in custom orangerie planters define the terrace’s seating groups, while climbing hydrangea vines emerge from matching orangerie-style troughs and ramble along the parapet railing. Combined, the individual interventions form a storybook style setting ideal for a leisurely afternoon.
