HARBOR COUNTRY HIDEAWAY

On the Bluffs of Lake Michigan, this landscape knits together the idyllic natural setting with a shingle-style residence  designed by one of Chicago’s leading interior and architecture firms.

Cues for the landscape’s character are drawn from the region’s indigenous plant communities to forge a sense of place. The west lawn that overlooks Lake Michigan nods to adjacent sand dunes. North of the residence, a secluded garden space references open woodlands.  At the Entry Court, local oak savannas offer inspiration.

Architectural motifs also serve as a design touchstone. Shifting volumes characteristic of shingle-style architecture are echoed in the landscape’s massing.  The facade’s unique flared apron is translated into a stone retaining wall that forms a belt around the Entry Court. Circular motifs in the trim and doors become limestone sphere finials atop gate posts, serving as thresholds between each outdoor room.  Plant materials bloom in a succession of ruddy purple hues, consistent with the tone-on-tone aesthetic of the facade.  Throughout, the garden provides privacy from surrounding neighbors, accentuates broad vistas to the Lake, and sets the stage for memorable summer celebrations.
